I love color in general, I suppose that most artist do... or they wouldn't be artists. But there is something magical about colored glass. Somehow it's richer and more alive than painted colors. As it glows it creates a glow inside of me, a resonance that is hard to describe. Last year we visited the Mimbres Museum in Deming, New Mexico. While there I saw a picture of this wonderful and powerful petroglyph from the Pony Hills region.

The caption called it "the white coyote going across the sky" and indicated that it was a symbol for a meteor, a symbol of death and destruction to the Mimbres people.

I took a picture of it, and I found that every so often the symbol surfaced in my consciousness.

Indeed it was the year of death for me. I lost both a beloved animal companion in the fall and then my mother, unexpectedly, while we were in New Mexico this year. Her death triggered a natural inclination in me to re-examine my own journey... to be sure I was on the right path.

What I discovered was that I was letting the day to day to day stuff nibble away at my creative time until there was very little left. My torch was untouched since summer. My paints - even longer. So I re-committed myself to my art, and in the process I decided to renew every aspect of what I was doing, including my studio name. I needed a fresh start.

The petroglyph emerged again in my thoughts; but I realized that my response was very different from that of the Mimbres people. Meteors to me were joyous and positive things. Even when they occasionally cause a mass extinction it's all part of nature's plan. It's all perfect.

And so White Coyote Glassworks was born. It's just right for me in so many ways.
